(Bosnia).- The ITIA renews its pledge to combat corruption following the suspension of a Bosnian chair umpire Damjan Dejanovic. Betting and data manipulation between 2022 and 2023 has led to a four-year exclusion, and an economic penalty for the official.
Bosnian chair umpire Damjan Dejanovic was handed the lengthy suspension after being found guilty of six violations by the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program (TACP) during 2022 and 2023, with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), tasked with safeguarding the sport's transparency, announcing the decision.
In its latest quarterly report released in late October, the ITIA revealed it had received 28 match alerts during the period via confidential agreements with regulated betting companies.
The Balkan's case, resolved in a virtual hearing on 9 October, exposed unethical conduct involving match outcomes and betting. While the umpire admitted to placing bets on professional tennis matches, he denied any involvement in data manipulation or conspiring to commit corruption during two matches he officiated. Despite his denials, Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer Diana Tesic found him guilty on all charges.
Known for officiating ITF tournaments with prize money of $15,000 (€13,690), Dejanovic was also fined $5,300 (€5,000). His suspension, which began provisionally on 8 January 2024, will run until 7 January 2028. During this time, he is barred from any involvement in professional tennis, including attending events organised by ITIA members, even as a spectator.
This case underscores the critical role of the ITIA, whose mission is to uphold the integrity of tennis. In a globalised sport, the fight against corruption is a cornerstone in maintaining the trust of players, fans, and sponsors alike.
